Antimicrobial activity of Cyanobacteria isolated from hot spring of Geno
Authors
Abstract:
Cyanobacteria, the blue green algae are one of the most diverse groups of Gram-negative photosynthetic prokaryotes widely distributed throughout the world. Cyanobacteria are known to produce a wide range of secondary metabolites with various biological actions. The aim of this study was to test extracts from various cyanobacteria isolated from Geno hot spring, Bandar Abbas (Iran) against a diverse range of organisms comprising Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and yeasts to evaluate its antibacterial and antifungal activities. Seven species namely Oscillatoria subbrevis, O. tenuis, O. limentica, O. angusta, O. articulate, Synechocystis aquatilis and Synechoccous cerdorum were selected for the production of antimicrobial agents against five Gram-positive and three Gram-negative bacteria, and two fungi. The results of this study showed that the methanol extracts exhibited high antimicrobial activity against some Gram positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and B. pumulis), moderate antibacterial activity against the some Gram negative organisms (Escherichia coli) and moderate antifungal activity against some fungi (S. cerevisiae).

The effects of Geno hot spring cyanobacteria on growth, survival and morphology of gill tissue in killifish Aphanius dispar in normal and long term thermal stress environments
A killifish species Aphanius ginaonis occurs in Geno hot spring is one of the unique fish species that could successfully survive and acclimated to the high temperature of hot springs. In this study, we investigated the effects of Geno's cyanobacteria extracts on growth, survival and morphology of gill tissue in Aphanius dispar exposed to normal temperature and long-term thermal stress. For thi...

full textEffect of nutritional and environmental factors on cellulases activity by thermophilic bacteria isolated from hot spring
This study presents effects of some nutritional and environmental factors on cellulases production by isolates, Bacillus licheniformis WBS1 and Bacillus sp. WBS3, which have been isolated from an Indian hot spring. Activity of both CMCase and FPase were higher in case of wheat straw. Maximum enzymatic activity was found at following optimum parameters: pH (8.0 when grown on rice, 9.0 when grown...

Although more than 3000 antibiotics have been reported from Actinomycetes/ higher fungi; biotechnological potential of yeasts and yeast-like fungi with respect to production of antimicrobial compounds has not been sufficiently investigated. We examined the antimicrobial activity of 11 strains of Aureobasidium pullulans (two new isolates and nine standard strains). All the strains of Aureobasidi...
